Prospective Students

Psychologists study the mechanisms that underlie our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. They examine a diverse range of topics, such as:

  • how the brain functions
  • how we learn
  • how we interact with others
  • how we can promote healthy development and wellness.

This is accomplished by conducting research so that the knowledge gained can help us to better understand the human mind, enhance well-being and performance, and generate additional research questions.

At Carleton, you will explore psychology’s major areas:

  • Cognitive
  • Developmental
  • Forensic
  • Health
  • Organizational
  • Personality
  • Social

Specialized topics include abnormal behaviour, criminal behaviour, positive psychology, human neuropsychology, and social and cognitive development.

Our Introduction to Psychology courses (PSYC 1001 and PSYC 1002) provide a tour of the discipline and an opportunity to consider areas for further study. We offer a wide variety of online course options including Open Access versions of Introduction to Psychology (available through e-carleton).
