The minor in Human Resources and Management for B.A. Honours Psychology was created cooperatively by the Department of Psychology and the Sprott School of Business with psychology students’ needs in mind! If you wish to learn more about management, human resources, and marketing, while also deepening your knowledge about psychology, then this minor will be perfect for you. It will give you that extra preparation before entering the workplace. Please see a list of frequently asked questions about the minor below.

Can anyone select this minor?

No. To register for this minor, you need to meet several requirements. First, you need to be a Bachelor of Arts Honours student with a Major in Psychology. Second, you need to have completed at least 4.0 credits toward your degree with a minimum overall CGPA of 7.00. Finally, you must successfully complete PSYC 2801, Introduction to Organizational Psychology, prior to entry into the minor with a minimum grade of B+. You should also note that this minor has limited enrollment due to capacity constraints. Hence, even if you do meet all the requirements, you still might not get access.

If I am accepted for this minor, which course will I need to take?

The minor in Human Resources and Management requires 5.0 credits. Two courses are in psychology and the rest are business courses. PSYC 2801 is required before you enter the program and PSYC 3801, Organizational Psychology II, is a prerequisite for all 4000-level BUSI courses listed in the Minor. Thus, you will want to take it as soon as possible. Otherwise, you will be able choose courses that focus on human resources, management, and marketing. The full minor is described below.

Some of these business classes look interesting, but I do not know if I want to do a full minor. Can I choose to do only one or two of these classes?

As a student in psychology, PSYC 2801 and 3801 are obviously open to you. Otherwise, you cannot take any of the BUSI courses listed in this minor if you are not registered for it. These courses are typically reserved for Sprott School of Business students.

How do I add the minor in Human Resources and Management?

You can add this minor by going to Carleton Central and selecting “Change Program Elements”. To add the minor, you must select Human Resources and Management from the drop down menu. Please note, before making adjustments to your program elements, we strongly encourage you to meet with your academic advisor.

Is there something else that I should know about this minor?

Yes, you must maintain an overall CGPA of 7.0 throughout your degree. If your CGPA drops below this level, you will be excluded from the minor and you will not be allowed to return. You should also note that it may be challenging to schedule all the BUSI courses that you need in addition to your other psychology courses required for your program. Hence, it is highly recommended that you complete PSYC 2801 and PSYC 3801 in your second year to give yourself as much time as possible to fulfill the remaining requirements.
