Blake Barkley is a PhD candidate in Political Science with a focus on Comparative Politics and International Relations working under the supervision of Dr. James Milner. Blake’s research seeks to uncover how refugee hosting states in sub-Saharan Africa make decisions regarding asylum policies and how they interact with various stakeholders at the local, national, and international levels. His dissertation focuses specifically on the case of Kenya.
Blake received a Master of Strategic Studies from the Centre for Military, Security, and Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary. His MSS thesis was titled: “Manipulating State Failure: Al-Shabaab’s Consolidation of Power in Somalia.” He also holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Western University with an Honors Specialization in International Relations and a Major in Sociocultural Anthropology.
In 2015, Blake published an article in the Journal of Military and Strategic Studies entitled: “The Last Vestiges of Statehood: Failed States and the Groups that Work Within Them.”
