Policy:
Chemical pesticide use will be strictly controlled at Carleton University in order to protect the university community and the environment from unnecessary exposure to hazardous substances.
Purpose:
The purpose of this policy is to ensure that chemical pesticides such as fungicides, herbicides and insecticides are used only as solutions of last resort within the broader framework of Carleton University’s Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program. Within the IPM program, a hierarchy of administrative, mechanical, biological and lastly chemical controls is used to control undesirable organisms, plants, insects or animals to ensure compliance with relevant provincial and federal legislation and to recognize the university’s commitment to the highest achievable standard of environmental quality.
Scope:
This policy applies to all employees, contractors and students of Carleton University, as well as to all building occupants and visitors.
This policy does not apply to chemical pesticides used for research purposes in controlled laboratory environments.
Procedures:
- Facilities Management and Planning administers Carleton University’s IPM program.
- All requests for pest control must be submitted to the Facilities Management and Planning via the Maintenance Control Centre (MCC).
- If specific circumstances, as guided by the IPM program, indicate that the application of chemical pesticides is required, Facilities Management and Planning will clearly communicate the impending pesticide application to all affected members of the university community. After the chemical pesticide as been applied, warning signs will be posted.
- No other departments or members of the university community may use or store chemical pesticides on campus.
